6 tips to redecorating your bathroom in black

Cue the music! If you are dreaming of a black bathroom instead of dreaming of a white Christmas, this article is for you! The epitome of elegance and sophistication, black hasn’t always been the most favored color in home décor, let alone bath décor. With black becoming more and more of a trend that doesn’t seem to be slowing down, it’s natural to fantasize about redecorating your bathroom in the somber color. It is, however, easy to be overwhelmed when deciding exactly how to do it. Traditionally, black is thought to close up spaces and make them seem small and cramped, but in reality, when done well, a black bathroom can be as bright as any other.

If you are thinking of redecorating your bathroom and are thinking of using black as the predominant color, it means you are, more often than not, attracted to modern and edgy aesthetics with a luxury feel. Here are a few ideas about how to get the black bathroom of your dreams:

1. LESS IS MORE

When it comes to using black, the phrase ‘less is more’ really comes in handy. Being such an encumbering color, it makes a statement all on its own, no help needed. Don’t try to add a thousand decorating pieces to the bathroom, especially if black is the predominant color, because it will make the space feel cramped.

2. Add just a little

A great way to incorporate black into, either your existing bathroom, or your remodel design, without committing to it full-on, is to use it moderately. Later in this article you are going to see some BLACK bathrooms with capital letters, but you don’t have to go all black to get a modern, sleek feeling to your bathroom. Paint the door or just one wall, add a black chair, or get a tub and paint the outside black. These details will boost the elegance of the space immensely without drowning it.

3. Space and light counts

If your bathroom is large and has a lot of natural light, black is the perfect color, because there is no chance it will look small or cramped. As you can see in this space, the long mirror and the glass shelves really help to reflect the light in the room. The minimalist decorating also helps to clear the space, helping it look clean and polished. The black bathtub at the end becomes a focal point, and looks almost heavenly in front of those big windows. Can you hear the angels calling?

4. Black all over

Even though black is not a traditional color for a bathroom, don’t be scared to use if you like the aesthetic. Sometimes, you just have to commit. Like in this next bathroom. It’s very dark, but it’s also extremely modern and sleek. The choice of the glossy tiles in contrast with the matte walls makes the floor look almost liquid, with the shower just soaring above it as the magnificent centerpiece; the floating bathroom fixtures and hangers add to this mirage. The great aspect of the shiny floor is that it really helps reverberate the light throughout the entirety of the space. Plus, the great thing about using ALL black is that you can add basically any other color to the palette and it will look great!

5. Flashy

When you have a space with tall ceilings, the risk of making the room feel cramped by using dark colors practically disappears. As you can see in this next proposal by RiFRA, they have used the hanging light over the vanity, and the oversized mirror to draw attention to the high ceilings. The use of shiny surfaces also helps reflect the light around the room, from the glossy floor, to the stainless steel fixtures and frame on the mirror, anything you can do to add flecks of light. The fixtures, such as the hangers, the lamps and the mirror are almost sculptural in the space; elongating the room and making it feel like they are on display. In addition, the contrast between the dark outside and the white inside of the freestanding tub gives it an unearthly feel and makes it the focal point of the room.

6. Add some neutral

Another way to incorporate black in your bathroom is to combine it with neutral tones like in this example with the K.FLY unit in black cement. The contrast makes the vanity almost disappear into the wall, and the long mirror with the backlight allows the light to echo around the room. The freestanding bath in white is also a source of glow in the room and really takes center stage. The combination of materials really helps freshen the look and stops the room from feeling like black hole.

Black for a bathroom is not your typical choice, and it can be risky. However, when done right, it can take your bathroom game to a whole new level. Here, we gave you only a few examples of how you can add black to your bathroom; but there’s a thousand more ways to do it. No matter what you decide to do, remember that black is bold, so do it with confidence. Like a little black dress, a black bathroom will never go out of style, needs minimal accessorizing and is a great idea for any occasion.
